Some of them have been long, some very short and some very wide. The world’s most famous wedding dresses have come in every style and guise. Royal weddings have provided many of the most memorial bridal moments.

 Who can’t picture Diana, Princess of Wales, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, or Grace Kelly in their gowns?

 While many a celebrity’s dress has proved just as anticipated. Such as Kate Moss‘s ethereal John Galliano design.

Solange Knowles eschewed many of the traditional wedding elements to marry her long-term love Alan Ferguson. The bride arrived for the ceremony. Which took place in New Orleans, on a bike and wore a Stéphane Rolland jumpsuit before switching into a Humberto Leon for Kenzo gown. The bridal party moved from the church in the style of a brass band parade.  Complete with sparklers, dancing and music.

Queen Elizabeth II was just 21 when she married Prince Phillip.  In November 1946. The couple had met when she was just 13 years old at the wedding of his cousin, Princess Marina of Greece. Her Majesty famously saved up ration cards to purchase the material needed. The gown was made of ivory duchess satin and decorated with 10,000 imported white pearls, silver thread and tulle embroidery. Her bridal ensemble also included a 15-foot patterned full court train attached at the shoulders. And a silk tulle veil held in place by a tiara lent to the princess by her mother.

Ten years after meeting at university, Kate Middleton married Prince William at Westminster Abbey on April 29 2011.  Becoming HRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Throughout their six-month engagement, the designer of Kate’s wedding gown was kept a secret. Leading to intense global speculation. The designer was finally revealed as Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton. But not until the final moment when the bride was making her entrance into the Abbey.

Famous wedding dresses: Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham wore a Vera Wang gown to marry David at Luttrellstown Castle in Ireland on July 4 1999. The couple changed into matching purple outfits by Antonio Berardi for the reception.  Where they famously were seated on custom-made thrones.

Jacqueline Kennedy wore a full-skirted dress by New York designer Ann Lowe.  When she married John F Kennedy at Hammersmith Farm in Newport, Rhode Island, in September 1953. She completed her look with little white gloves and a full veil. Kennedy went on to become President of the United States. He was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, in November 1963. Jacqueline then married Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis in 1968.  Becoming known as Jackie O.

Famous wedding dresses: Grace Kelly

The dress that Grace Kelly wore for her April 19 1956 wedding to Prince Rainier was designed by MGM costume designer Helen Rose.  And was made from 25 yards of silk taffeta, antique rose-point lace.  Pearls by three dozen seamstresses, who worked on it for six weeks.

The wedding dress that Queen Victoria wore to marry Prince Albert in February 1840. Sparked a trend for white wedding dresses that is still in vogue today.

The first of Elizabeth Taylor’s seven husbands was Conrad “Nicky” Hilton. They were married in Beverly Hills in May 1950. And Liz wore a dress by Helen Rose. The MGM costumier who designed Grace Kelly’s wedding gown. And the dress bore a striking resemblance to the one Taylor wore in Father of the Bride The costumes of which were also created by Rose. And the marriage ended in divorce after just nine months.

In 1952, when Elizabeth Taylor married her second husband, English actor Michael Wilding. The divorce was not as accepted as it is today. As such, she wore a demure. Three-quarter sleeve, ballerina-length dress with a matching jacket for the London ceremony. Rather than a traditional white dress. Wilding and Taylor were married for almost five years and had two sons.  Michael and Christopher – together.

In May 1959, when Elizabeth Taylor married her fourth husband, singer Eddie Fisher.  Who left his wife Debbie Reynolds to marry Taylor.  She wore a short, hooded, forest green dress with matching shoes. And a bouquet made up of orchids and baby’s breath. Taylor’s third husband, producer Mike Todd. With whom she had a daughter, Liza ( had died in a plane crash in March 1958).

Following her divorce from Fisher. Liz went on to marry (and divorce) Richard Burton twice. Before two further marriages, to politician John Warner from 1976 to 1982. And to construction worker Larry Fortensky (whom she met in rehab), from 1991 to 1996.

To marry Kanye West, Kim Kardashian called on Riccardo Tisci to design her custom-made Givenchy white lace gown. The couple were married at the Forte di Belvedere in Florence, Italy.

Audrey Hepburn married actor Mel Ferrer in September 1954. After starring with him on Broadway in the play Ondine. She wore a typically full-skirted Fifties ballerina-length style by Pierre Balmain with roses in her hair. Their marriage lasted 14 years, until December 1968. And Audrey went on to wed Italian psychiatrist Andrea Dotti in 1969.

For her March 1969 wedding to John Lennon.  Yoko Ono wore a white minidress. Accessorised with a sun hat and over-sized sunglasses. Zsa Zsa Gabor cuttingly described the couple as looking like “two people going to hold up a bank”.

For her second marriage. She was married to James Welch from 1959 to 1964.  Raquel Welch wore a crochet dress for her February 1967. Paris wedding to Hollywood producer Patrick Curtis. She teamed her dress with a three-quarter length white fur coat. Welch and Curtis were divorced in 1972. And Raquel went on to marry French producer and writer Andre Weinfeld (1980-1990). Then restaurateur Richard Palmer (1999-2008); both marriages ended in divorce.

Diana, Princess of Wales, wore a dress designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel for her July 1981 wedding to Prince Charles. Her gown‘s 25-foot train is the longest in royal wedding history. Charles and Diana were divorced in 1996.  And in August 1997, she was tragically killed in a car crash.

For her November 1961 wedding to Frank Sinatra.  Ava Gardner wore a halterneck dress with a sheer shawl. This was Ava’s third wedding. And Frank’s second. With her first being to Mickey Rooney during the war in 1942. At which she wore a woolen suit in a show of austerity. They were divorced in 1957.

John Galliano created the pink gown that Gwen Stefani wore on her wedding day in September 2002. When she married Gavin Rossdale in Covent Garden. After the wedding, Stefani donated the dress to the Victoria & Albert.  Saying it was “a piece of art” and it was exhibited in the museum’s 2014 Wedding Dresses exhibition. The couple have three sons, Kingston, Zuma and Apollo.

Frank Sinatra’s third wedding in June 1966 was to Mia Farrow. Who wore a neat skirt suit and who was just 21 at the time (Sinatra was 50). They were famously married in 15 minutes at The Sands Hotel in Las Vegas. Their marriage lasted two years before they were divorced. Frank then married Hollywood agent Barbara Marx in 1976. While Mia went on to marry composer André Previn in 1970. And was then in a long-term relationship with Woody Allen from 1980 to 1992. Allen and Farrow broke up after it was discovered that he had formed a relationship with her adopted daughter, Soon-Yi.
